About this campaign

People are hungry but we have food. People are homeless but we have homes. In a world divided, our class is seeking unity.

Classgrou67jpgWe are a small class of students (ages 12 and 13) with a diverse range of personalities, interests, and views on the world. But we’ve grown up together, meeting as early as preschool, and have become close friends and formed a strong community. In our desire to seek more unity in a world we see as greatly divided, we are organizing a class trip to connect with other cultures, peoples, and communities to exchange ideas together, to understand what is needed for change, and how to unite in creating impact.

Each month we will highlight a world issue that has divided communities. We will offer a different inspirational tshirt each month to raise awareness.

Every month, one of us will write about a charity or cause that we have some personal connection to and feel inspired about; and will donate 50% of our fundraising profits to support that charity. The other 50% will go towards our 8th grade class trip.

This month’s highlighted issue is feeding the homeless.
The original artwork was a collaboration of the class and made by Anna Allen and Raine Fawcett-Kern.
The author is Julia Lanier and she is speaking about the Hampton House Garden Project in our hometown of Reno, NV, USA.

Julia: “For my campaign, I am choosing to help the homeless. When I was younger, I always thought that everyone lived a good life, had parents, and everyone was equal and happy, just like me. Then I saw someone asking for money by the side of the road, and I felt really sad. My mom was in the car, and she asked if I'd like to do something to help the unhoused. She said that we could cook some vegetarian chili for the refrigerator at Hampton House, a public refrigerator and community garden where volunteers can leave food, and anyone who needs it can take some. So we cooked 13 bowls of chili, with cheese and chips, and delivered them to Hampton House. It was fun, cooking for the fridge every other week.”

“Hampton House is a garden where people go to heal. The food that grows there goes to people in need. Lily Baran, who started Hampton House, allows people to grow their own food. She also has a refrigerator out front for the unhoused and those in need. You can make food and put it in the refrigerator as a donation. Lily likes gardening and helping people heal. Her cause is also aimed at empowering black and indigenous communities and connecting them to their roots and others. She is a believer in mutual aid, which is when everyday people try to fix the world by doing small things that make a big difference.”

We would love to hear about what is happening in your hometown around homelessness. Please share to continue the conversation.
