Chive MD

The Chive Maryland (www.facebook.com/groups/ChiveMD) has raised over $31,000 for charity and held several other charity events in its short existence. A local chivette from Annapolis, Melissa Smith, has been selected as Chive Charities newest recipient.

Melissa had Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice in her 20s before being diagnosed with transverse myelitis; a rare spinal cord condition which has caused Melissa to be paralyzed from the chest down. Her family has to care for her around the clock and hopes to help Melissa regain some of her independence by providing a handicapped accessible home. But the costs involved are high and the disability checks do not even cover basic expenses. Her sister has been leading the charge to raise the money.

I spoke with her sister Stephanie, who submitted Melissa’s story to Chive Charities for over 8 months before finally getting the great news: her sister was selected as their next recipient! She has been helping set up fundraisers and events around Annapolis, but no group can compare to the Chivers. Thechive.com will be posting the story soon and begin their expert flash campaign. I know we will see the goal and shatter it. Chive Maryland will push hard to help out one of our own!

The proceeds from each shirt sale will go to Chive Charities. We will total them up with the previous shirt sales and everything else that is raised at the Southern Maryland meetup.
