About this campaign
While human trafficking is most often recognized as a global issue, it is very much a problem nationwide, including in our own backyard. Over the past decade, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has received 2,551 calls and uncovered a total 574 cases of trafficking in DC. In 2016 alone, the hotline reported sixty-eight cases. While human trafficking seems like a daunting issue to tackle, there is something the average citizen can do. Help spread awareness by purchasing a shirt and take comfort in knowing all proceeds will go to an organization dedicated to helping victims get back on their feet. The Amara Legal Center is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to individuals in the DC metropolitan area whose rights have been violated through commercial sex acts, including those who are victims of trafficking. To say thank you to Amara for selecting such an important cause.
I'm supporting this campaign because human trafficking is a terrible problem, particularly in my home state of Ohio, where Toledo is used as a trafficking hub between Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Kentucky.
I think that a lot of people (myself included) sometimes forget the severity and reality of human trafficking due to its portrayal in horror movies where people are lead to believe that it's something that only happens in foreign countries.
This is a very worthwhile cause and to spread this important message.
