A Historical designation was filed and has been approved for historical study!
We need your help to restore Brewster Wheeler and to raise awareness to all people and all Detroiters. Mayor Duggan cannot destroy Brewster Wheeler its our history, our memories.Our children, our community needs opportunities and chances!
Restoring and preserving the center will build a strong community, will brighten the peoples eye and allow us to save a building with so much meaning and hope! Our city, our communities has been waiting a long time for our community centers to be restored and put to use!
Brewster Wheeler recreation center opened up to the public in 1929.
The historical building holds tons of incredible history.
Joe Louis Barrow made his debut at the Brewster Wheeler along with his younger friend Sugar Ray Robinson. They both attended Brewster Wheeler to keep from getting into trouble on the streets. Legendary Eddie Futch also trained at Brewster Wheeler, Eddie Futch also taught Joe Louis that "mean" uppercut which leveled Joe Louis and Muhammah Ali in 1969. Other legendary boxers trained at Brewster Wheeler such as, Emanuel Steward, Delmar Williams, Kenneth Offett, Dave Clark and Sam Hughes.
The Harlem Globetrotters trained at the center on a daily basis. Early basketball stars such as Gus Finney, Harry Russan, Wilbret King and Bob Showboat Hall helped bring national attention to Detroit basketball after joining the Globetrotters.
Chris Webber donated the basketball floor in the early 90's, the floor was made out 2,500 old donated gym shoes.
Mayor Coleman Young described his amateur debut in the Brewster Wheeler boxing ring in his 1994 book, "Hard Stuff"
