About this campaign

Omphalocele awareness day is January 31st. Help spread awareness of this birth defect! An omphalocele is a birth defect of the abdominal wall. The infant’s intestines, liver, or other organs stick outside of the belly through the belly button. The organs are covered in a thin, nearly transparent sac. 1 in every 4,200 babies are born with an omphalocele in the US. Many babies with an omphalocele also have other birth defects, most commonly heart defects, neural tube defects, or chromosomal abnormalities. The causes of omphalocele among most infants is unknown.

My daughter, Adeline, was born at 39 weeks on April 30th, 2020 with a small, isolated omphalocele containing bowel. What this means is she had an omphalocele with no other defects and only had intestines in the sac. At 13 hours old, Adeline went into surgery to close her abdomen. Since she had an omphalocele, she does not actually have a belly button! Her ‘belly button’ was actually man-made by her wonderful surgeon and is off center to where the umbilical cord was. On her 4th day of life, she was finally allowed to start drinking some breastmilk. By day 7, she was discharged! Not all babies can go home in a short amount of time. Many “O” babies stay in the NICU or PICU for months, if not years, due to complications from their omphaloceles and other defects if they are present.
