Mount St. Mary's Baseball Grill Team

I wanted to draw more students to the baseball games this coming season. When I was in high school my brother’s varsity baseball team had a group of fans that would drive their trucks up the first baseline and set up a simple Weber Grill and cookout just before the games would start. Eventually, parents would hover over and ask for burgers. From then on the grill team began to charge about a dollar for a plain burger and a dollar for a hot dog. Eventually they began to sell small items like bags of chips form Costco and a few types of pop/soda and sold everything for the price of $1.00. It proved to be a great addition to the game because who doesn’t love eating a good burger while watching a game of baseball? Eventually this group became so popular that some of the guys designed their own bright orange shirts with the name Grill Team on them.

I wanted to bring this idea to the Mount for about four years of undergraduate school. Since I was lucky enough to attend the Mount for graduate school I decided that the time is NOW, I'M DOING IT. I believe this idea will really draw students in from the other side of campus because it will give them something other than the game (cheap food) to look forward to! So, I thought of ordering the t-shirts myself and selling them to friends/family members on the team for a very low cost. These t-shirts are meant to be extremely affordable for students to promote the concept of school spirit and to draw as many people as we can to the games. While considering the cost of the burgers and hot dogs chips and drinks and thought hmm… how am I going to afford this? It will all be worth it after the first game because the money made from the burgers we sell will be used to buy the burgers for the next game. Any left over money will be donated to the Mount baseball team.

There is a website McKenna Veasy showed me that will address all of the concerns that I have come across. I couldn’t be more excited! Eventually we will have short sleeve shirts and tank tops available but because it will be a bit colder during the first few games I thought a long sleeve t-shirt would suffice for now.

The plan for now is to have the school set up grills, a tent with heaters, and music. I will bring a set of cornhole boards. The event is planned to be set up and ready to go about an hour before the games so that way everyone can have some fun and fuel up before the game starts and then move the our focus to the boys.
