Maci's Mended Heart - Onesie Edition!

When Karissa Whisner and her husband Josh went to their routine 20-week scan for her second child, they learned their precious daughter Maci had a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The condition is fatal without a series of open heart surgeries.Maci was born April 14, 2016. Shortly after birth, doctors determined the heart defects were more severe than originally anticipated. They concluded Maci's condition was inoperable. Karissa and Josh decided to take Maci home so she could spend her days surrounded by love, friends and family.As Maci near a week old, Karissa's pediatrican for her son Jake contacted Karissa after following Maci's story on Facebook. He wanted to refer Maci to a leading pediatric cardiac surgeon at Boston Children's Hospital. The surgeon reviewed Maci's case and took on Maci's case!

Josh, Karissa & Maci headed to Boston and experienced ups and downs during their stay, but thankfully, Maci's first several surgeries were successful, and in April she celebrated her first birthday at home with her family in Ohio. After extensive testing, the Whisners recently learned Maci's complex heart is due to a genetic disorder called Mowat-Wilson Syndrome. Children with Mowat-Wilson Syndrome often experience cardiac birth defects and developmental delays and are known for their happy and cheerful disposition. Maci and mom Karissa traveld to the annual Mowat-Wilson conference in Summer 2017 to learn more about this very rare genetic syndrome and what to expect for Maci's future.
