About this campaign
Purchase a limited edition t-shirt and show your support for the Iroquois Indian Museum! Our goal is to sell 100 shirts by Saturday, November 9th. Once this date passes these shirts will no longer be available, so make sure you take advantage of this special opportunity! Funds raised through the sale of these shirts will enable the Iroquois Indian Museum to create additional interpretive signs for the nature park, print brand new nature park maps, and acquire more plants for the area surrounding the museum.
These exclusive t-shirts feature a stylized illustration of a ruby-throated hummingbird nestled in the middle of a strawberry plant. Both the hummingbird and the strawberry hold special meaning for the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people and both are popular motifs in Haudenosaunee art.
Hummingbirds are associated with the traditional game of lacrosse and they are revered for their agility and ferocity despite their small size. Watch a group of hummingbirds compete for a prime position in front of a delicious flower and it becomes obvious that these little birds are impressive athletes.
Hummingbirds also represent freedom, transformation, and connectedness. Leigh Smith, Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan, writes, “The hummingbird belongs to the winged nation. The winged nation represents freedom for they are able to live in two worlds, in the Sky World and on Mother Earth. These beings remind one to remain connected to all parts of ourselves and that we also have the freedom of transformation. The creator gave the hummingbird a special purpose in this world to ensure the continuation and survival of the plant world. Native people understood that everything in the natural world was interdependent and cosmically connected.”
Hummingbirds and strawberries both make their reappearance to the land during the early summer months. Strawberries are a particularly special berry because they are one of the first fruits to ripen in the Northeast. When the wild strawberry is ready to harvest it is a sign that the cycle of life will continue as it should. These berries are celebrated with a special ceremony in mid-June.
