What is Kenai Peninsula Home School Activities Committee? (K.P. H.A.C for short)

K.P. H.A.C is an independent student lead organizing committee. Founded by me, Vanessa Lopez, in 2016, as a 15-year-old homeschooled freshman. The idea merged from a challenge by my teacher / parent- “ Your missing social interaction that public school provided, like dances, what can you do about it?” Up to the challenge and in the spring of 2016 I set up an organizing committee of 8 homeschooled students and some adults. Together we created the Kenai Peninsula Homeschool Activities Committee and organized the first home school prom. Over 40 students were in attendance. The K.P. H.A.C did not stop there, we formed a mission statement: “To have all-inclusive family events. To have a safe environment. To encourage social interaction. To have fun with Homeschool Friends and Families.” and a plan of action to organize activities for homeschooler of all ages. Fundraised for the money necessary to plan formal dances, pool splash days, summer park days and beach clean-up day. All while giving back to the community by partnering with new business locations as a venue to increase family activities for all kids on the peninsula. To date K.P. H.A.C has held events at The Corner Book Store, Sharps Billiards Family Fun Center. Soon to locations near you. This is a student-lead committee; the students think up the ideas and implement the plan with little to no help from the adults on the committee. Students learn leadership skills, money handling, fundraising, advertising, social issues, conflict resolution all while working to make homeschooling more fun. Participation in the group earns volunteer time and in most cases, can be used as some type of school work. Hands on learning and community service learning projects do go hand in hand as the committee continues to plan events. In October, with the help from Bridges Community Resources Network, Inc., Kenai Peninsula Homeschool Activities Committee took another large step and became a fledgling 501 3 c Non-Profit Committee. Which will allow individuals and businesses alike to donate money, goods, time and talents to the mission of K.P. H.A.C. The K.P.
